That girl with her glassy eyes and empty expression...to think that it was a result of this place alone, that her spirit has been so broken...

"If I have to give up hope to survive here," Athessa says, hoarse from the days without water and the emotion that's trying to strangle her. "You might as well kill me now."

Hardly a dignified death; naked, shivering, broken and alone. She wouldn't get her rites, and though her relationship with tradition is tenuous, that thought still terrifies her. But to be turned into a husk is a far worse prospect than wandering the Fade forever.

"And what do you suppose happens to me, if I kill you here," Adiuta replies on her way to the stairs, "to my son?"
Her words are harsh, but she doesn't have the energy, the venom, to make them cruel. This is the reality she's learned to live in, until something better comes along.

The tears are bitter, and they sting, and she doesn't even bother wiping her face because the movement would be far more uncomfortable right now than the wetness on her cheeks. Can't she at least have some clothes, she might beg, if she weren't so stubborn.
