The Howes actually own this land, though Nathaniel has only built a small house on it. He's saving the real work for his nephew. That's the real inheritor of the land. But for now, two Grey Wardens make use of it when they are on leave. It is close enough to the city of Amaranthine that Nathaniel's relations come to visit sometimes. Delilah has made it clear that Anders is family now, as much as if he had married into the Howes.

Nathaniel is outside performing a maintenance waxing of the Howe family bow when Anders returns from the city. He folds the cloth he was using, sets it aside, and stands, moving to greet Anders as he approaches. He stops in his tracks, though, when he sees Anders is not alone.
